TVA staffs and retirees keep their cool, weathering winter’s worst shots
By VICKIE ELLIS, TVARA Valleywide President
I hope this newsletter finds you well after having tolerated some extremely cold weather and, in many parts of the Tennessee Valley, some snow.
During this time TVA met the highest demand for electricity in its more than 90-year history on Jan. 22. The peak power demand on that date was 35,319 megawatts set at 9 a.m. EST. The average temperature across the Valley then was 11 degrees.
Congratulations to the TVA staffs who worked hard to ensure the power system was ready for such cold weather.
It is time once again to renew your dues for 2025. You will receive a dues notice in the mail indicating the ways you can make payment (PayPal, check, money order, or Online Bill Pay). Dues remain $15.
We have already received a large number of renewals for this year. Thanks to everyone for continuing to contribute to the TVARA organization. Please see the accompanying article by Richard Wilson on page 16 of the March 2025 issue.
Our volunteer efforts are highlighted by Penny Walker on page 3 in this issue of the March 2025 newsletter.
Also, volunteering at one of TVA’s visitor centers is a great way to serve as an ambassador for TVA and meet wonderful visitors from around the world. There is a BVI article on page 5 detailing the efforts of those staffing the centers last year and announcing this year’s opening dates.
And there is a special appeal to RV operators to help staff the Kentucky Dam Visitor Center.
Many retirees participate each year at the centers and really enjoy the opportunity to tell the TVA story.
We continually update our mytvara.org website with new articles of interest, along with chapter meetings and volunteer activities. Check back often to see updates on your chapter.
Lastly, one of our goals this year is to take a strategic look at our organization. We want to look at our operations, funding, and organizational structure and make sure we are best prepared for the future.
We plan to undertake this review over the next few months and will report back in a future newsletter.
